AI-First Requires Human Fluency

Despite the “AI-first” push, a significant gap in human understanding and training threatens successful AI integration. Experts argue that widespread education, fostering AI literacy to fluency, is essential for organizations to truly harness its transformative power.

The whispers of artificial intelligence have grown into a roar, echoing through boardrooms and coffee shops alike.

AI-first” has become the mantra, a strategic beacon for businesses striving to navigate the choppy waters of the 21st century.

Yet, beneath the surface of this ambitious declaration lies a stark, unsettling reality:

For many, the very foundation upon which an AI-first future must be built – understanding – is alarmingly fragile.

It’s a classic case of the cart before the horse.

Companies are eager to harness AI’s transformative power, to automate, innovate, and differentiate.

However, the human element, the very people who must conceive, implement, and manage these systems, are largely unprepared.

This isn’t merely a minor oversight; it’s a gaping chasm in the strategic blueprint, threatening to bog down even the most well-intentioned AI initiatives.

Consider the pipeline of future talent.

A recent student-run survey, published in EdTech, revealed a concerning statistic:

A staggering 65% of students reported having no opportunity to take AI-specific or AI-inclusive courses at their universities.

Even more disheartening, only a paltry three percent felt genuinely confident that their education would equip them for a career in an AI-driven field.

This suggests a systemic failure in academic institutions to keep pace with the accelerating demands of the modern economy, leaving a generation potentially ill-equipped for the jobs of tomorrow.

The problem isn’t confined to the campus.

Current employees, too, find themselves adrift in the AI revolution.

While the percentage of workers leveraging AI tools in their jobs has surged from a mere eight percent in 2023 to more than one-third (35%) this spring, a survey by Jobs for the Future paints a sobering picture:

Only 31% of these workers received employer-provided training on these tools.

This means the vast majority are learning on the fly, with a striking 60% reporting that their AI use is primarily for self-directed learning.

This individual initiative, while commendable, cannot substitute for structured, comprehensive organizational education.

It’s akin to sending soldiers into battle with only a vague idea of their weaponry, hoping they’ll figure it out on the battlefield.

This educational deficit is precisely the critical juncture highlighted by Adam Brotman, former chief digital officer at Starbucks, and Andy Sack, former adviser to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, in their insightful new book, “AI First: The Playbook for a Future-Proof Business and Brand.”

Their message is unequivocal: an AI-first policy is dead on arrival without a robust commitment to education and training.

“An AI-first mindset requires a commitment to ongoing education about AI technologies and their potential applications,” they write, emphasizing that it “encourages experimentation and learning from both successes and failures, ensuring that teams stay ahead of technology advancements.”

The path to AI fluency, according to Brotman and Sack, is a progressive journey, not a leap.

It begins with “AI literacy,” where individuals might use AI for basic search or drafting simple emails.

Organizations might leverage it for rudimentary cost-cutting or customer chatbots.

This is the foundational stage, where the unfamiliar becomes less daunting.

Next comes “AI proficiency.” Here, individuals venture into more complex tasks, perhaps creating custom GPTs for specific purposes or even developing bespoke AI applications.

For organizations, this stage sees AI integrated for workforce automation, ideation, advanced content creation, and more detailed customer interactions.

It spreads its influence across various departments to enhance productivity.

It’s a period of deeper integration and more sophisticated application, moving beyond mere novelty to genuine operational enhancement.

The ultimate destination is “AI fluency,” the state of being truly AI-first ready.

At this advanced level, individuals don’t just use AI; they innovate with it, creating novel solutions and significantly enhancing their personal projects and productivity.

Crucially, they develop a profound understanding of AI’s capabilities as well as its limitations, fostering a discerning and responsible approach.

For organizations, fluency translates into AI being extensively woven into strategic decision-making, resource allocation, and efforts to improve margins and achieve competitive differentiation.

This is where AI moves from a tool to a strategic partner, driving significant business impact and market position.

What makes this framework particularly compelling is its philosophical underpinning: a borrowing from the “lean” approach to management.

Brotman and Sack champion “AI-first lean thinking,” which prioritizes continuous improvement and innovation through iterative cycles of building, measuring, and learning.

It’s about identifying core problems, developing minimum viable products to test hypotheses, reducing waste, and understanding customer needs through direct feedback.

It also involves dynamically pivoting strategies based on data and insights.

This isn’t just about deploying technology; it’s about embedding a culture of agile, data-driven adaptation, ensuring that AI initiatives are not just technologically sound but also genuinely responsive to market needs and organizational goals.

The implications are clear: the future belongs not just to those who adopt AI, but to those who truly understand it.

Without widespread education and a strategic approach to fostering AI literacy, proficiency, and ultimately, fluency, the grand pronouncements of an “AI-first” future risk becoming hollow echoes, drowned out by the reality of an unprepared workforce and unrealized potential.

The investment in human capital, in knowledge and understanding, is not an accessory to AI adoption; it is its very heart.

Only then can organizations truly advise on appropriate AI use policies, prioritize potential AI pilots effectively, and genuinely harness the revolutionary power of artificial intelligence.

The time for education is now, before the AI wave crests and leaves the unprepared floundering in its wake.
