In an era where the world is more connected than ever, the race for faster and more reliable internet continues to intensify.
Enter CTO (Constellation Technologies & Operations), a French satellite broadband startup that is ambitiously setting its sights on the stars—or more accurately, very low Earth orbit (VLEO).
With an eye on transforming the telecom landscape, CTO has forged a strategic partnership with TDF, France’s titan in carrier-neutral hosting sites, aiming to bridge the gap between space and terrestrial telecommunications.
This partnership, announced on March 20, marks a significant step forward in CTO’s mission to integrate its VLEO 5G services with existing terrestrial networks.
By leveraging TDF’s extensive infrastructure, CTO plans to test the feasibility of using cellular frequencies from telecom partners to deliver VLEO services directly to user terminals—a technological feat they are developing in-house.
This agreement not only sets the stage for innovative backhaul services and emergency communications but also underscores a shared vision of becoming neutral hosts for telecom operators—TDF on the ground and CTO from space.
The venture is buoyed by a $10 million investment from France’s state-backed Expansion Ventures fund, a testament to the country’s confidence in CTO’s ambitious plans.
The startup aims to deploy a constellation of 1,500 small satellites at an altitude of 335 kilometers, significantly lower than the altitude at which SpaceX’s Starlink operates.
This strategic positioning could potentially offer faster communications and smaller user terminals, although it comes with its own set of challenges, such as increased atmospheric drag.
Despite these challenges, CTO is undeterred.
The company is on track to launch a test payload in June via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare mission.
This payload, hosted on a spacecraft from Italy’s D-Orbit, will support initial end-to-end 5G tests from altitudes between 550 to 600 kilometers before CTO commits to its VLEO deployment.
The ambitious roadmap includes deploying its first VLEO satellites next year, with the full constellation expected to be operational by 2029, offering global service coverage.
But perhaps one of the most critical aspects of CTO’s vision is its potential to revolutionize emergency connectivity.
In the wake of natural disasters, when ground-based relay antennas are disabled, CTO’s inter-satellite links promise to maintain connectivity by allowing signals to “hop” across regions, ensuring uninterrupted communication.
This capability could prove invaluable in disaster scenarios, providing a lifeline when terrestrial infrastructure falls short.
Moreover, TDF’s local expertise and workforce will play a crucial role in facilitating rapid connectivity deployments in critical situations, highlighting the synergy between the two companies.
As CTO and TDF continue to pave the way for this new frontier in telecommunications, they are not just bridging the gap between earth and space—they are redefining what it means to stay connected in an ever-evolving digital world.
