Born from the urgent needs of the very companies Orange EV serves, OptiGrid’s premise is elegantly simple: provide quickly installed, movable charging units that bypass the traditional pitfalls of grid expansion.
These aren’t just glorified power banks; they are sophisticated energy reservoirs designed to deliver a swift jolt of power when and where it’s needed most.
As OptiGrid CEO Tyler Phillipi succinctly puts it, fleets are “coming to market and they have nothing to charge with.
Basically, there’s no infrastructure.”
This stark reality fueled the creation of OptiGrid.
The Kansas City, Kansas-based company’s units operate on a concept called battery-integrated DC fast charging.
They draw and store up to 180 kilowatt hours of power from the grid, or even a renewable source, then dispatch it at a variable output of up to 200 kilowatts.
Phillipi’s analogy clarifies the genius behind it: “What we do is the same thing a water tower would do or a reservoir.
We build up kilowatt hours of storage.
Then whenever the vehicles that need it come by, we dump it in, and then we slowly fill it back up.
Think of it as a water hose in and a fire hose out.”
This ‘fill slow, dump fast’ approach is a game-changer for operations that demand rapid turnaround times.
Installation is remarkably straightforward, requiring just a few hours to wire into a power source and secure with eight bolts on a forklift-compatible base, allowing for easy relocation if operational needs shift.

Parent company Orange EV, a prominent name in Class 8 electric terminal trucks, witnessed firsthand how infrastructure delays were throttling their customers’ electrification efforts.
The core technology for OptiGrid was originally developed by FreeWire Technologies, a company that, despite its innovative approach, eventually faltered.
However, trucking industry veteran Wayne Hoovestol, discerning the latent value in FreeWire’s assets, acquired its intellectual property and engineering team.
He then collaborated with Orange EV’s founders, forging the partnership that birthed OptiGrid in April.

Phillipi foresees a future where this agile charging solution addresses broader societal needs, particularly in residential settings.
“Multifamily housing has a major power supply problem, and then dropping in a unit like this really, really unlocks the building’s ability to support the growing number of customers who have this need for charging on site.”
This insight points to a critical bottleneck in urban electrification, where existing electrical infrastructure in older buildings often struggles to accommodate the demands of personal EV charging.
