TVL Not an Investment Signal, Algorand Study Concludes

New research from the Algorand Foundation reveals total value locked (TVL) is not a valid crypto investment signal. The study found TVL does not predict token value, prompting a call for more robust metrics.

The shimmering mirage of Total Value Locked, long considered a cornerstone metric for cryptocurrency investors, has been exposed as little more than a superficial illusion.

A groundbreaking study from the Algorand Foundation, released this week, delivers a stark warning: TVL, as it stands, is a woefully inadequate compass for navigating the volatile seas of crypto investments and portfolio construction.

It’s a metric, the research implies, that has become far too easily gamed, leading countless enthusiasts and even seasoned analysts astray.

For years, the crypto world has fixated on TVL, treating it as a proxy for project health, user adoption, and even future price appreciation.

Dashboards proudly displayed soaring figures, headlines trumpeted new TVL milestones, and investor decks leaned heavily on its supposed credibility.

Yet, behind the impressive numbers, the true economic activity often remained elusive.

Now, academic rigor has pulled back the curtain, revealing a fundamental disconnect between locked capital and actual financial performance.

Under the guidance of Dr. Matthew Brigida, a distinguished associate professor of finance at SUNY Polytechnic Institute and the chief economist for the Algorand Foundation, a comprehensive analysis spanning over 300 cryptocurrencies (excluding Bitcoin and stablecoins) from 2023 to 2024 yielded a definitive conclusion: TVL simply does not predict token value.

The research team meticulously constructed weekly portfolios, sorting tokens by their TVL, then attempting to generate alpha by holding the top 25% and shorting the bottom 25%.

The result? A resounding zero.

No abnormal returns. No predictive power.

“TVL has often been embraced as an indicator of credibility or potential appreciation, but our findings conclusively demonstrate its failure as an investment signal,” Dr. Brigida stated, cutting straight to the heart of the matter.

He went on to emphasize that even after meticulously addressing known issues like double-counting—a common flaw where the same capital is counted across multiple protocols—TVL-based portfolios still offered no discernible advantage.

This isn’t merely a minor flaw; it’s a systemic failure in a metric that has dictated billions in capital allocation.

The implications are profound.

For too long, the industry has prioritized the sheer volume of locked assets over the qualitative aspects of their utility.

Projects could inflate their TVL through various means, sometimes by simply offering exorbitant yields, attracting capital that was often transient and driven by speculative incentives rather than genuine engagement or long-term belief in the protocol.

It fostered an environment where the illusion of activity could overshadow real economic value, turning what should have been a serious financial indicator into a competitive sport.

However, a quiet revolution has already been brewing beneath the surface.

While TVL continues to dominate many crypto headlines, a growing number of forward-thinking platforms and analysts have begun to question its supremacy.

Messari, Artemis, and Token Terminal, for instance, have started relegating TVL to a secondary position, acknowledging its limited scope.

Blockworks, a prominent crypto media outlet, has pioneered the concept of Real Economic Value (REV), shifting the focus to more tangible indicators of a project’s worth.

Community-driven analytics tools like Dune and L2BEAT are also adapting, either decentralizing the interpretation of TVL or introducing alternative metrics like Total Value Secured (TVS), which attempts to measure the security provided by locked assets rather than just their quantity.

Nansen, a leading blockchain analytics firm, further contextualizes TVL by scrutinizing wallet behavior and “smart money” flows, recognizing that who is locking value is often more important than how much.

Flipside Crypto, another innovator, has championed the significance of high-value users over the blunt instrument of TVL, emphasizing quality over raw quantity.

This collective shift underscores a maturation of the cryptocurrency market.

As digital assets become increasingly intertwined with global finance, the demand for more robust, reliable, and economically sound metrics grows.

The Algorand Foundation, with its commitment to fostering integrity and scalable innovation, views this study as a crucial step in that evolution.

By blending rigorous academic research with real-time blockchain insights, they aim to drive data-driven innovation in Web3, pushing the ecosystem towards a more truthful reflection of value.

The message is clear for platforms, researchers, investors, and media alike: it’s time to move beyond the superficial.

The era of TVL as a primary investment signal is drawing to a close.

The future demands metrics that genuinely reflect actual usage, economic demand, and sustainable value creation.

For investors, this means a deeper dive into the fundamentals, an understanding of real utility, and a healthy skepticism towards any single, easily manipulated number.

The crypto market is growing up, and its metrics must grow with it.
