In an era where automation is not just a trend but a necessity, Universal Robots (UR) has once again upped the ante with the launch of their latest collaborative robot, the UR15.

This announcement, made at the Automate trade show in Detroit, marks a significant milestone in the evolution of cobots, promising to redefine productivity and efficiency across multiple industries.

The UR15 is not just a robot; it is a testament to two decades of innovation and relentless pursuit of excellence in collaborative automation.

With a top TCP speed of 5 meters per second, this cobot is touted as the fastest in UR’s portfolio.

This speed translates to a 30% improvement in cycle times for pick-and-place applications, setting a new benchmark in the industry.

The implication? Businesses can now achieve unprecedented levels of productivity, optimizing operations while reducing costs.

One of the standout features of the UR15 is its adaptability.

Despite its enhanced capabilities, it retains the lightweight design and compact footprint that UR cobots are renowned for.

This makes it an ideal fit for tight workspaces, a common challenge in industries like automotive and electronics.

Its versatility is further underscored by its ability to handle a payload of up to 17.5 kg in specific orientations, making it suitable for tasks such as palletizing, which require greater strength and precision.

At the heart of the UR15’s prowess is OptiMove, UR’s cutting-edge motion control technology.

This innovation ensures smooth and precise movements even at high speeds and with heavy loads.

The cobot is powered by PolyScope X, an industry-leading software platform that comes AI-ready.

This positions the UR15 not only as a tool for today but as a future-proof solution capable of harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to enhance usability and functionality.

The collaboration with NVIDIA to develop the UR AI Accelerator further illustrates UR’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with cobots.

By integrating NVIDIA’s CUDA-accelerated libraries and models, the UR15 can be supercharged to develop AI-driven applications, offering a glimpse into a future where physical AI is not just a concept but a reality.

This was aptly demonstrated at the Automate show, where a turnkey quality control process featuring the UR15 and the UR AI Accelerator showcased the potential of this technology in transforming real-world applications.

The UR15 is designed to meet the diverse needs of its users, spanning across sectors like automotive, metal and machining, and electronics.

Each of these industries presents unique challenges, from the cramped spaces of automotive production lines to the demanding conditions of metalworking environments.

Yet, the UR15 rises to these challenges, offering enhanced ingress protection, superior cleanroom quality, and seamless integration with autonomous mobile robots (AMR) and automated guided vehicles (AGV).

Tero Tolonen, UR’s product manager, emphasized the importance of listening to customer needs in the design process.

“Each industry has its unique set of requirements that shape our approach to both our cobots and ecosystem solutions. UR15 is our response to help customers tackle today’s challenges and seize tomorrow’s opportunities,” Tolonen stated.

The launch of the UR15 also comes with a broader update to UR’s product lineup.

The high-performance UR series, which includes the UR20 and UR30, is tailored for operations requiring higher payloads and advanced features.

Meanwhile, the e-series has been revamped, with models like the UR5e and UR10e receiving payload upgrades and new names—UR7e and UR12e—to better reflect their capabilities.

Universal Robots’ mission is clear: to make automation accessible to all, anywhere.

With over 100,000 cobots sold globally, their user-friendly platform, bolstered by award-winning training programs and a robust service ecosystem, continues to deliver innovation and choice to customers worldwide.

As part of Teradyne Robotics, a division of Teradyne, UR is at the forefront of integrating advanced robotics into everyday business operations.

In conclusion, the UR15 is more than just the fastest cobot; it is a strategic leap forward in the realm of collaborative automation.

As industries continue to navigate the complexities of modern production demands, UR’s latest offering stands ready to empower businesses to overcome challenges, innovate, and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
