In an era where the hum of servers is as omnipresent as the buzz of bees, Big Tech is turning to an unexpected source to fuel its insatiable appetite for energy: nuclear power. As the digital titans like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon embark on ambitious plans to power their AI-driven futures, they’re finding themselves at the crossroads of innovation and legacy.

This shift not only highlights the growing energy demands of artificial intelligence but also underscores a renewed interest in nuclear energy—a field long relegated to the shadows of public skepticism and regulatory hurdles.

In a move that seemed ripped from the headlines of a speculative fiction novel, Microsoft announced its $1.6 billion investment to restart the infamous Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. Yes, that Three Mile Island, the site of the 1979 partial meltdown that placed a chilling pause on nuclear energy development in the United States.

But in a world grappling with climate change, where the carbon footprint of data centers poses a significant dilemma, the past is being reimagined as a promising solution. Joe Dominguez, CEO of Constellation Energy, views this site as a monument to progress—a testament to lessons learned and improvements made.

Reopening Three Mile Island is not just about nostalgia or romanticizing the past; it’s about pragmatism. For Microsoft, and indeed the tech sector, nuclear energy offers a path to reliable and carbon-free power, essential for meeting their net-zero emissions goals.

Dominguez asserts that resurrecting an existing facility is vastly more economical and expedient than building anew—a sentiment that rings particularly true in an industry where time is money, and speed is paramount.

But what if you don’t have a defunct nuclear plant lying in wait? Enter Google and Amazon, wielding innovation like a wand, conjuring the future of nuclear with small modular reactors (SMRs).

These next-generation reactors promise the holy grail of energy: scalable, reliable, and clean. Google’s partnership with Kairos Power is a bold step into this arena, embracing a technology that is as much a vision as it is a venture.

Mike Laufer, CEO of Kairos, paints a picture of compact reactors powered by “fuel pebbles” that boast the energy potential of traditional reactors, minus the bulk and some of the risks.
