Electric vehicles take center stage as Indonesia grapples with slow adoption. Infrastructure improvements and local manufacturing offer hope for a greener future.

The bustling city of Jakarta, Indonesia, is currently playing host to a future seemingly dictated by the hum of electric motors rather than the roar of traditional engines. The Indonesia International Motor Show has thrown open its doors, showcasing a cavalcade of electric automobiles and motorbikes, despite the country’s sluggish adoption of such technology.

But what does this mean for a nation that is one of the most populous on the globe and yet finds itself lagging in the electrification race?

With over 50 international and domestic brands on display, the event is a veritable who’s who of automotive ambition. Notable entries include Chinese giant BYD with its Sealion 7 electric SUV and Vietnamese newcomer VinFast debuting its VF 3 mini SUV.

Even new players like China’s Honri are making a splash with their Boma EV. Meanwhile, stalwarts like Germany’s Volkswagen and BMW’s Mini are eager to carve out their own niches in this burgeoning market.

Motorbikes, the often unsung heroes of Indonesia’s roadways, are also front and center. With a staggering 132 million registered two-wheelers reported in 2023, the motorbike market is a titan in its own right.

Here too, electric options are making waves, with iconic brands like Royal Enfield and Vespa sharing the spotlight with locally-produced Alvas.

Against the backdrop of this electric utopia, it is vital to address the elephant in the room: the country’s slow uptake of electric vehicles. While the flashy unveilings and futuristic test drives paint a vivid picture of progress, the reality on the ground is far more complex.

EVs and electric motorbikes currently make up a mere 7% of Indonesia’s vehicular fleet. The reasons for this are multifaceted, with high costs, lack of infrastructure, and performance concerns forming a trifecta of hurdles.

Yet, hope is on the horizon. Companies like VinFast are not only introducing vehicles but are also tackling infrastructure head-on.

Their partnership with V-Green aims to deploy 30,000 chargers across Indonesia, a move that could significantly bolster consumer confidence and adoption rates.

In parallel, companies are laying down roots with local manufacturing plants, supported by the Indonesian government’s eagerness to transform the nation into an electric vehicle hub. This is no small feat, given the country’s rich reserves of critical materials essential for battery production.

Indonesia’s Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, remains optimistic, suggesting that events like the motor show are critical in reinvigorating the automotive sector amidst a broader economic slowdown. In 2024, vehicle sales fell by nearly 14%, a stark reminder of the challenges facing the industry.

But there is a broader narrative at play here, one that extends beyond the automotive sector. Indonesia’s energy mix remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels, with renewable sources accounting for just 14% in 2024.

The transition to a cleaner, greener future is as much an energy challenge as it is a transportation one, requiring a concerted effort across all sectors.

So, as the motor show dazzles attendees with promises of an electric future, the real test lies in overcoming the practical barriers to electrification. It’s a journey that will require innovation, investment, and a collective commitment to change.

Only then can the vision of a greener Indonesia become a reality, with electric vehicles leading the charge.
