In a move that might perplex even the most seasoned tech industry insiders, HP has thrown a lifeline to one of Silicon Valley’s most notorious flops, Humane.

The startup, which once ambitiously set out to dethrone the iPhone with its AI Pin, has been acquired by HP for a cool $116 million.

It’s not quite the $1 billion valuation Humane once aspired to, but for a product that quickly became a meme-worthy disaster, it’s astounding they fetched anything at all.

Humane’s AI Pin had all the ingredients of a Silicon Valley fairy tale turned sour.

With promises of a screenless AI interface that would liberate users from the tyranny of their smartphones, the Pin was supposed to be revolutionary.

The company even managed to capture the imaginations of high-profile investors and tech enthusiasts, swelling to an $840 million valuation.

Yet, the product’s reality was a far cry from its sales pitch.

Selling fewer than 10,000 units, the Pin became infamous for its lackluster performance, with some units reportedly catching fire.

If there was ever a tech product that epitomized the concept of “all show and no go,” Humane’s AI Pin was it.

HP’s decision to acquire Humane is perplexing, to say the least.

One could argue that the company is banking on Humane’s AI platform, Cosmos, and its 300 patents to enhance its own product ecosystem.

Tuan Tran, HP’s President of Technology and Innovation, seems to believe that this acquisition will usher in a new era of AI-driven innovation across HP devices.

But is this optimism a stroke of visionary genius, or a desperate attempt to salvage some value from the ashes of a failed experiment?

Critics might liken HP’s acquisition to buying a sinking ship, but there’s a method to the madness.

Even in failure, Humane managed to create a buzz, albeit for the wrong reasons.

The AI Pin’s notorious reputation could serve as a cautionary tale for HP, a reminder of the fine line between innovation and overambition.

The company may hope to leverage Humane’s intellectual property and engineering talent to create a truly intelligent ecosystem, one that delivers on the promises Humane made but failed to keep.

For HP, a company that has long thrived on the profits of its printer ink empire, this acquisition could signal a bold pivot towards a more AI-centric future.

Or, cynically speaking, it might be an elaborate way to distract users from the incessant reminders that their magenta ink is running low.

Whether this gamble will pay off or become yet another cautionary tale in the annals of tech history remains to be seen.

As HP embarks on this new venture, one can’t help but recall the old adage: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Perhaps this time, with the lessons learned from Humane’s spectacular fall, HP can turn a notorious flop into an unexpected success.

Or at the very least, ensure their next product doesn’t become a meme for all the wrong reasons.
