Camp Pendleton, California – A new era of warfare is taking flight at Camp Pendleton, where the familiar roar of jets and thunder of artillery are increasingly being joined by the high-pitched whine of drones. What once seemed like science fiction, or perhaps a niche hobby, has rapidly become the cornerstone of modern military strategy, forcing the Marine Corps to pivot with astonishing speed in a global drone race that shows no signs of slowing.
For Cpl. Christopher Magana Pinawin, 21, the journey from a fourth-grader struggling to keep a battery-powered toy drone aloft for ten minutes to an intelligence specialist expertly navigating attack and reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a testament to this seismic shift. A decade ago, the idea of drones being “so widely used” was unimaginable to him.
Today, as he trains to both deploy and counter these aerial machines, the reality is stark and, as he admits, “a little scary.” The “lethality of drones,” he observes, is “something straight out of a video game.” But this is no game; it is the grim reality of evolving conflict.
This urgent need for proficiency was evident on a recent range at Camp Pendleton, where Magana Pinawin and other infantry Marines plunged into the initial days of a rigorous two-week drone integration course. The scenario was chillingly plausible: defending a simulated base against a swarm of make-believe enemy attack drones.
Marines weren’t just learning to shoot them down; they were mastering the intricate dance of electronic warfare, jamming enemy signals with radar and sophisticated equipment to buy precious seconds, all while considering where a downed drone might land. These are not just targets; they are potential unexploded devices, demanding the same meticulous care as an improvised explosive device (IED) in a combat zone.
Lt. Col. Nick Freeman, director of the 1st Marine Division schools, leaves no doubt about the impetus behind this intensified training. He points to the battlefields of Ukraine, Russia, and Israel, where drones have reshaped tactical engagements, providing real-world, often brutal, case studies.
The global “drone race” is no abstract concept; it is a live, immediate threat. “The examples we’ve seen around the world have really helped drive the conversation at higher levels,” Freeman explains, noting how rapidly the entire Department of Defense is adjusting policies to enable this critical training.
Earlier this year, the Marines even established a dedicated attack drone team, linked to the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, signaling a profound institutional commitment.
The Camp Pendleton course itself is a masterclass in modern military pedagogy. A round-robin setup introduces Marines to diverse technologies before moving into hands-on practical application.
Trainees don goggles to experience the drone’s real-time perspective, then apply their newfound skills in a fictional battle scenario. The core philosophy, as Freeman articulates, is “integration.”
It’s not about replacing traditional warfighting tools but understanding how drones fit seamlessly alongside them, creating a more adaptive and formidable fighting force. “They are not depending overly on one piece of technology,” he states, “but learning how to fight against an adaptive enemy by adapting them.”
This emphasis on constant adaptation is perhaps the most striking aspect of the new doctrine. 1st Lt. Gannon Peifer, the course instructor, stresses that any piece of equipment Marines use today might need updating within a month, given the blistering pace of drone technology development.
The training manual itself is a living document, revised monthly to keep pace. “That’s just the pace that the service is moving,” Peifer says, “We’re going fast and that’s a good problem to have.” This relentless pursuit of currency underscores a military grappling with a technological arms race unlike any before.
Beyond defense, the training also encompasses offensive capabilities. Marines learn to take the fight to the enemy, identifying and targeting hostile drone teams.
In one exercise, they used dropper drones to deploy tennis balls and water balloons, simulating precision strikes. They deployed radar to anticipate threats and radio frequency detectors to pinpoint enemy drone types, gaining crucial intelligence before engagement.
The training is evolving, with live-fire ammunition slated for future exercises, pushing the realism to its extreme.
The post-engagement protocol for a downed drone is equally telling. Freeman insists that a captured drone must be treated like an unexploded device, requiring safe disarming and exploitation.
“What frequency is it operating on? What explosives are being used?” he queries, emphasizing that “every time you capture one of these, you’re learning what the enemy is doing.” This mirrors the hard-won lessons from asymmetric warfare, adapting them to the airborne threat.
For Corporals Jacob Bennett and Nathan Baptiste, both 22 and part of the 3rd Battalion/4th Marines, the simulated mission was a resounding success. Bennett, from Fort Myers, Fla., launched his high-altitude drone to scout for enemy operators.
“I spotted an enemy hiding in a small hut,” he recounted, even seeing the “hand control on the windowsill.” This critical intelligence was relayed to Baptiste, of Houston, Texas, who then guided a lower-altitude attack drone.
“I used my camera to process a grid of the location and passed it on to the platoon commander,” Baptiste explained. “He sent up a fire mission from a ground mortar and destroyed it.”
Their mission complete, both recognized the profound implications. “When you see what happens in other countries, it’s more like this is where the future of warfare is going,” Baptiste reflected, adding, “It makes your job feel more important.”
Magana Pinawin, already a veteran of two other drone courses, fixed-wing and rotor, plans to carry these lessons back to his unit. He understands that mastering drone tactics, both offensive and defensive, is not merely an optional skill but a fundamental requirement for the modern infantryman.
He intends to advise his leaders on new tactics and advocate for more Marines to undergo this essential training. In a world where the battlefield is increasingly defined by the silent hum of unseen wings, the Marines at Camp Pendleton are not just adapting; they are charting the course for the future of combat, one drone flight at a time.
