Karwatzki’s detective work pinpointed the culprit: a “bad commit” in the Linux kernel, specifically related to AMD’s integrated and discrete GPU drivers.

This bug was tied to the kernel address space layout randomization (KASLR) feature, which is intended to bolster security by randomizing where the kernel loads in memory.

Enter Nvidia, the unexpected hero of the hour.

An engineer from the company stepped in to address the bug that had slipped through the cracks.

This bug, ironically, originated from a previous Nvidia commit, underscoring how even the most innovative companies can trip over their own shoelaces.

The Nvidia engineer’s patch resolved the issue by tackling a DMA (direct memory access) addressing error that was exacerbated when KASLR was disabled.
