In the heart of Chicago, a startup is reshaping the future of liquid assets, and it’s not with the usual suspects like stocks or bonds.

Instead, Unicorn, an innovative online auction platform, is making waves by turning prized bottles of bourbon into lucrative investments.

Founded just five years ago, this digital marketplace has already auctioned off over $125 million worth of wines and spirits, earning it the nickname “the eBay of imbibing.” source

The brainchild of Phil Mikhaylov, a tech veteran and first-generation Russian immigrant, and Chicago bar owner Cody Modeer, Unicorn is capitalizing on a growing market for collectible liquors. market trends

The platform offers a seamless experience for both seasoned collectors and first-time enthusiasts, with auctions featuring everything from $20,000 bottles to those priced under $100.

This democratization of luxury spirits has contributed significantly to the company’s rapid growth.

Unicorn’s operations are housed in a 30,000-square-foot facility on Chicago’s North Side, previously home to the Empirical Brewery.

Here, bottles are authenticated, digitized, and stored, ready to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

The company facilitates the entire process, from appraisal to shipping, ensuring that even the rarest bottles reach their new owners safely.

One of the standout features of Unicorn is its vault, a storage area packed with 25,000 to 30,000 bottles at any given time.

Each week, the platform auctions off between 4,000 to 6,000 bottles, generating sales between $1.2 million and $2 million. With a 100% sell-through rate in most auctions, Unicorn’s business model is proving to be both sustainable and profitable.

The allure of Unicorn lies not only in its inventory but also in its cultural and historical significance. For instance, the company houses a rare Rip Van Winkle 20-year-old bourbon, valued at a staggering $150,000.

Such treasures draw collectors from across the country, eager to own a piece of history.

The platform’s success has attracted a diverse group of investors, including venture capitalists, NBA players, and large wine and spirits collectors. With $5.8 million raised so far, Unicorn is planning another round of fundraising to expand its operations further.

The company already employs 75 people across two Chicago locations, including a larger warehouse in Bridgeport for long-term storage.

Unicorn’s rise comes at a time when the global alcohol market is undergoing significant shifts.

As younger generations drink less and opt for nonalcoholic alternatives, the demand for rare and collectible spirits is surging. This trend is highlighted by reports showing a decline in overall alcohol consumption in the U.S. source

The platform taps into this trend by allowing users to trade bottles as digital assets, transforming once-ignored liquor cabinets into financial windfalls.

Take the story of Robert Drousth, a retired mechanical designer from Madison, Wisconsin.

Over the years, he amassed a collection of 18 bourbon bottles, initially valued at around $1,500. Today, that collection is worth between $31,000 and $39,700. Although Drousth never intended to sell, the rising value of his collection made it difficult to justify keeping the bottles unopened.

Through Unicorn, he’s now able to capitalize on his investment.

While Unicorn is flourishing, it’s essential to recognize broader societal trends affecting the alcohol industry. Recent data shows a decline in overall alcohol consumption, with more Americans viewing drinking as harmful to health.

The rise of the “sober-curious” movement and health-conscious lifestyles are driving these changes, influencing how people perceive and consume alcohol. trends

Despite these trends, the allure of collectible spirits remains strong. Unicorn’s success underscores a growing appreciation for the cultural and historical value of rare liquors.

As the company continues to innovate and expand, it stands at the forefront of a new era in the auction industry, where liquid assets are more than just a financial investment—they’re a celebration of craftsmanship and heritage.

As Unicorn prepares for its next phase of growth, it’s clear that the platform is not just about buying and selling bottles. It’s about connecting people with a shared passion and preserving the legacy of some of the world’s most exquisite spirits.

In this digital age, Unicorn is proving that even the most traditional of assets can find new life online, one bottle at a time.
