It’s no secret that the race to dominate smartphone photography has led to some rather unwieldy designs, with manufacturers cramming ever more sophisticated lenses into their devices.

The result? An awkward bulge that not only disrupts the phone’s sleek aesthetic but also catches on pockets and complicates the use of wireless chargers.

Enter Xiaomi’s Modular Optical System, a promising concept that was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona.

This system proposes a detachable lens that attaches magnetically to a smartphone, effectively eliminating the need for a permanent camera bump.

Imagine the possibility of a phone that’s both elegant and highly functional, no longer forced to compromise design for the sake of photographic prowess.

At the heart of this innovation is LaserLink technology, a proprietary communication system that uses near-infrared laser to transfer data at a staggering 10 Gbps.
