Recent events have brought into focus how important it is for every nation to understand who they are as nations and what made them successful. Not only do these national identities play an integral part in our daily lives, but they also influence the way we relate to other countries and people.

Many studies show that when there’s less diversity within groups, individuals feel more connected to their racial or ethnic group and thus, develop stronger in-groups biases and stereotypes.

These internalized prejudices can negatively affect our perception of others outside of our group, making it harder to accept people from different cultures.

It may even motivate us to perpetuate inequalities because we believe in the superiority of our own culture. On the contrary, strong cultural identity can promote empathy, understanding, and appreciation of other cultures.

There’s a term referred to as “cultural exchange” which describes the process by which one country comes to understand another. More than just studying about past glories of your country’s history, this concept encourages exploring other cultures through art, literature, music, and anything else you find interesting.

The goal of cultural exchanges isn’t simply to learn something new, but rather to go beyond simple observations and descriptions and really get inside the mind of the other culture. This helps you explore not just why each culture succeeded, but also what could make theirs fail.

Chinese and Western cuisine

example of cultural exchange

When talking about international cuisine, there are two main categories that most people recognize. These are European or American food and Asian food. However, what makes “Asian” food not only unique, but also different than other types of “Western” food is its diversity.

The term “asian” actually refers to several geographical regions with their own distinct cuisines. Japan, China, Korea, India, and Thailand all make up the Asia region. Each of these countries have very specific culinary traditions that influence how they cook and eat certain foods.

Japanese food has many similarities to western food, such as both having noodles and bread as a base ingredient. The difference comes in the spices used to flavor the dishes and the use of rice instead of pasta or bread for eating.

Chinese food is one of the biggest differences between eastern and western cultures. They do not put much emphasis on using individual ingredients to create recipes. Instead, they blend all of the raw materials together into a rich sauce which is then spread onto your plate. This process is called stir-frying and is quite common in china.

Thai food seems to combine both Italian and Japanese styles; it uses a cooked grain like rice to soak up the flavors of the sauces and vegetables that go along with it. What makes Thai food special is the balance of salty, sour, spicy, and sweet taste sensations in each dish.

Chinese and Western language

Speaking another language is one way to understand other cultures. This is called linguistic exchange, or dialectic translation.

By understanding the roots and structure of different languages, you can connect with them in an authentic way. Plus, being able to speak some French or Spanish makes your inner child very happy.

Chinese people are not only known for their love of money, but also for their ability to hone in and learn new skills.

So why not take advantage of this skill by picking up a few words? Or even better, start speaking Mandarin!

There are many ways to begin practicing Chinese, so choose one that fits into your schedule. Some of the most common ways include watching movies and TV shows in Chinese, listening to songs and stories in Chinese, reading books in Chinese, using Google Translate, and talking with natives.

Chinese and Western religion

example of cultural exchange

Throughout history, different cultures have been exploring spiritual concepts in ways that are unique to them. This process is called cultural exchange.

There are many examples of this throughout human history. For instance, during the Ancient Greeks’s golden age they explored several forms of worship that included gods like Zeus, Apollo, Athena and Hermes.

The Romans incorporated some Greek traditions into their own culture, adding newer deities such as Jupiter, Mars and Venus. Even today, you can find bits and pieces of ancient religious practices in various religions around the world.

With Christianity being one of the most well-known faiths, it borrowed heavily form both the Hebrews’ belief system and Greco-Roman mythology.

And just because something is no longer practiced doesn’t mean people forget about it. Many Hindus practice yoga, for example, even though it was mostly replaced by Western exercise routines like Pilates or Vinyasa flow yoga.

Similarly, Buddhism has spread across the globe due to its peaceful teachings.

Chinese and Western customs

When traveling, it is important to know what kind of cultures you will encounter. You should not only be aware of which countries’ cultures are similar or different from your own, but also how their culture differs from that of other nations.

Some examples of this are with food. In some cultures, people greet each other with meals. If you greet someone with a meal, they will expect to receive the same thing as you. This can get expensive quickly!

Another example is when attending events, like a football game, people usually bring their own snacks and drinks. There may be nothing you want at the event, so you have to buy something else to eat or drink. It can cost a lot if you don’t buy ahead.

You must remember however, never assume anything about another person’s culture. Never try to do things such as serving yourself during an event or thinking that everything has been bought for you.

How to travel while still having fun

Being motivated to explore new places is one of the biggest reasons people traveling enjoy it. If you are not motivated, then staying at home is the better option.

Having fun in your travels comes down to two things: location and activity. You will need to find locations that are interesting and/or have something to do or visit them when you are able.

Activity-wise, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the scenery as you travel. But if you want more from your trip, you can always look into doing some exploring or take an organized tour.

There’s no reason to feel like you have to spend money to have an active vacation.

Try new things

example of cultural exchange

Living in a multicultural society means trying new foods, exploring different cultures, and learning about other people’s traditions.

This is important not only because it fun, but also because you learn something from every experience. You can never truly know someone else’s culture if you don’t try to understand it.

By being open-minded and curious, you will find that your lifestyle changes and yourself grow as a person.

Recent events in our country have shown that there is no safe space for diversity in America. With each passing day, racism, xenophobia, and white nationalism seem to be increasing in both frequency and intensity.

Many people cite social media as the main cause of this growing divide. People feel free to spread racist views and hateful messages without any sort of moral consequence.

In fact, some studies suggest that exposure to such speech can actually increase prejudice and discrimination! That’s why it’s so important to educate yourself about different cultures and histories, and learn how to reduce bias through understanding other people’s points of view.

It may also help you recognize signs of potential danger or risk of violence towards groups that are not like yours.

While these are all very good things to do, they go beyond your personal life and into the world at large.

Tell people you know about new things

example of cultural exchange

As mentioned earlier, cultural exchanges occur when one group learns something new from another group. These can be anything form watching TV shows together to learning how to make pasta in your own kitchen!

Exchange happens when two or more groups are connected through common interests. When you learn new things, they’re not only interesting for you as someone who knows them, but also for those around you.

They may admire what you have learned or want to try it themselves. You get inspired by their behaviors and adopt some of these same habits.

It is very possible that these changes happen immediately, over months, or even years depending on what item people are trying out and how well it works for them.
