In the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, OpenAI has unleashed a veritable alphabet soup of ChatGPT models, each claiming a unique prowess. But the real question is, does the average user care which variant is fielding their everyday queries?

To answer this, I dived into the nitty-gritty of four contenders: o3, o4-mini, GPT-4o, and GPT-4.5, each promising a distinct flair in the AI realm. Let’s embark on this journey with a playful yet insightful exploration of their capabilities.

A Sudoku puzzle served as the first arena, a test of visual reasoning and logic. Here, o3 and o4-mini offered concise, mathematical solutions, while GPT-4o and GPT-4.5 infused their problem-solving with a conversational charm.

This contrast in style—mathematical precision versus conversational flair—set the tone for our exploration. Next, I challenged the models to compose poetry.

Creating a poem about the seasons, with each line following the alphabetical order, required a balance of creativity and structure. While all models adhered to the format, o3 broke from the rhyming mold, presenting a more straightforward verse.

The others, including GPT-4.5, managed to sprinkle in a touch of poetic flair. Yet, none quite reached the heights of poetic luminaries like Emily Dickinson.

The culinary domain was the subsequent battleground, where I tossed an eclectic mix of ingredients at the models. o3 emerged as the pragmatic chef, crafting a dish complete with a rationale for its flavor profile.

Its suggestion of “Spicy Sweet-Potato & Chickpea Toasts with Avocado-Mango Smash” was both inventive and approachable. Meanwhile, GPT-4.5 offered a gastronomic smorgasbord, including a “Refreshing Mango-Mint Sorbet” that left me contemplating a culinary experiment.

In a test of cultural sensitivity, I asked them to translate the idiomatic phrase “It’s raining cats and dogs” into Japanese. Here, the models demonstrated an understanding of nuance.

They collectively acknowledged the lack of a direct idiomatic equivalent, with GPT-4.5 providing a cultural explanation, and GPT-4o adding a playful touch with emojis. This exercise highlighted the sophistication of AI in navigating linguistic subtleties.

Through these tests, it became clear that while each model has its quirks and strengths, they all share a baseline competency that serves the casual user well. Whether you seek logical precision, conversational ease, or culinary creativity, these models have something to offer.

For those like me, perpetually in search of the perfect AI sous-chef, GPT-4.5 might just be the ideal kitchen companion—especially if that sorbet lives up to its promise. In conclusion, OpenAI’s diverse lineup of ChatGPT models offers a little something for everyone.

While they each bring unique strengths to the table, the choice ultimately depends on the user’s specific needs and preferences. As AI continues to evolve, these models remind us of the remarkable strides made in bridging human and machine interaction, one query at a time.
