Changing how people behave is not an easy task. It takes time, effort, and sometimes significant setbacks before changes are made. That’s why it can be so difficult to occur cultural change after something major happens like a natural disaster or a life-changing event.

After the September 11 terrorist attacks, for example, many people stopped eating meat due to the fear of being connected to terrorism. But as we know, terrorists don’t always eat meat, and there’s no proof that connecting with their diets helped them in any way!

So while some may feel uncomfortable about the diet choice they were making before 9/11, most people just move onto another food option.

Economic change

Changing what people believe about how things should be done is not always an easy process. It usually requires convincing, argument, or both.

Changing what people believe about how things should be done is not always an easy process. It often takes effort to persuade others that your way of doing something is better than their current one.

It can also require proof that your approach works better and there are now ways to test it. This is called evidence-based practice (EBP).

When EBPs are used in enough numbers they create a snowball effect. Once everyone uses them, then more people will use them, which creates even more opportunities for success.

History has shown us many times that when large groups of people come together, arguments are inevitable.

So how does cultural change happen?

Economic changes occur because people want different goods or services and are willing to pay different prices for them.

Social change

how does cultural change occur

Changing what people believe about something is called social change. It happens all the time, we’re constantly experiencing new changes in societal norms and beliefs. For example, before 1960 most people believed that it was immoral to eat meat if you wanted to become very healthy. Nowadays, however, there are many more options than just vegetarianism!

There are several theories as to why social changes occur. The two major ones are gradual adaptation and internalization.

Gradual adaptation occurs when parts of the population come into agreement with a given idea or concept. This usually takes place over an extended period of time due to repetition. It can also be because another group starts agreeing with the concept or idea.

Internalization means changing how much one believes in a concept by putting it into practice. This is particularly important since most social change begins with someone else first thinking about a problem and then creating solutions to it.

Political change

how does cultural change occur

One of the biggest factors in the downfall of oppressive regimes is when enough people are aware of the atrocities being committed by the government. When enough people become educated about the injustices, it creates an environment where violence is the option of last resort.

This isn’t to say that most people are not influenced by social pressures. We’re constantly exposed to messages telling us what we should believe and do not ever feel like we have a free space to think or be ourselves.

But at some point, all humans need to breathe. They need to take breaks from work and family, and just thinking for yourself is a healthy thing.

When more people start doing this, it forms a barrier against oppression. It becomes harder to go through with harmful actions because you realize how wrong they are. This is what happens during revolutions.

On both sides of any conflict, there are always supporters who agree with the regime. There are also opponents, but they are in the minority.

As more and more people become aware of the injustice, however, more people begin to oppose the leadership. More voices are heard, which makes it difficult to ignore. This is why political changes occur after a lot of exposure – even if only a small part of the population actively takes action!

Cultural shifts happen similarly. When enough people recognize the importance of something, they stop ignoring it and start acting upon it.

Religious change

how does cultural change occur

Changing what people believe about religion is an extremely difficult process that can be slow or quick depending on various factors. It takes time to educate individuals as to why something wrong exists, and it can take even more time to convince them that this wrong thing needs to end.

For example, many people believe that Islam is an inherently violent religion that encourages violence towards others. This belief comes mostly from watching news reports of Islamic countries around the world performing acts of terrorism.

However, there are several problems with this perception. First, most terrorists that claim to be acting on behalf of Allah do not follow Islam in any way. Only a small minority of Muslims commit acts of terror, and these individuals are often portrayed as “evil” Muslims who only use their faith for bad purposes.

Second, many terrorist attacks that occur across the globe actually have nothing to do with Islam at all. For instance, someone may use Islam as an excuse to murder a person because they think that person does not belong to the right church or sect.

There is no proof that attacking people because of their religious beliefs is ever justified, so trying to get people to understand that fact could prevent future acts of violence.

Lifestyle change

A large part of changing your lifestyle is simply choosing to make changes that are good for you. If you want to give up sugar, start by trying to limit it in your diet for one week. Then keep going until you’re no longer eating it anywhere!

If you’re struggling to lose weight, don’t feel like you have to drop size zero clothes or cut off half of your body. You can choose to modify your habits without making drastic changes.

By making small tweaks to how you eat and exercise, you’ll soon see results. And if you need help, there are many resources available these days.

You can read about fitness and nutrition tips online and at gyms. There are also plenty of apps and smart gadgets designed to motivate people to be more active.

Creative change

Changing what people expect from life is one of the most fundamental ways that major cultural shifts occur. People get into ruts, things lose momentum, things break down, and then something new comes along to inspire them.

This is how evolution happens!

Creative changes happen all the time in art, literature, music, and everyday life. When you read a book or watch a movie that touches you, you are reading or watching experiences that have inspired you to think about your own life, or learn more about the world.

The books, movies, and songs that have had an impact are called influential works. They push you forward, make you feel good, and sometimes even help you find yourself.

Influential works can come in many forms; they can be stories, poems, songs, films, or anything that has made a difference for someone. These types of works are part of what makes up our culture.

In this article we will discuss some theories on why creative works influence others. Then, we will look at several examples of how artistic styles emerge and fall out of fashion. This way you can begin to understand how creative work influences society.

Digital change

Changing how we communicate, work, play, and relate to each other is often described as a shift in ‘culture’.

A good way to think about this is by comparing two different communication styles.

The first is what I call the Connected Style of Communication. This is when people use language that focuses on similarities and relationships. They talk about things you both know or have experienced before, make comparisons between them, and emphasize relations over statements.

Examples include using “like” and “similar” more than “same”, talking about someone else’s success rather than their own, and emphasizing friendship over credit given for achievements.

The second style is The Productive Style of Communication which comes from the early days of the internet. Back then, communication was either all business or all personal, it had very little middle ground.

Now there are tools and strategies to facilitate Connected Communications. Technology makes it easy to add relationship features to your conversations, increase motivation to perform by celebrating successes, and reduce pressure to meet external standards.

This article will go into detail about some ways technology can help with cultural changes and shifts. However, remember that whether these tips work depends on the person and situation not the tool!

Also, be careful about assuming that digital devices and systems will always exist and function properly. A lot of times they don’t! Plan ahead and assume nothing.

Science and technology change

Technology is constantly changing, which means we must also reevaluate what works and what does not. This is why it is so hard to stick with one smartphone brand for very long- they are always coming out with new features that are totally redesigned interfaces or completely different ways of doing things.

The same thing happens with personal health strategies. When trends come and go, you learn which work and which do not! For example, there was a recent ‘trend’ of people giving up sugar altogether. Now, however, experts suggest we limit our sugar intake to around five grams per day (a small amount!), as too much can be harmful.

Something similar happened with diets. Before AIPs, diet debates were all about whether keto or low carb is better for weight loss. These days, there are many more options than just those two.
