The importance of culture in society is something we as humans should never underestimate. We live in an increasingly globalized world, where cultures are intertwined through trade, migration, and more. As such, how one group’s culture is influenced by that of another has significant implications for social harmony or unrest.

There have been many theories about why some groups develop stronger bonds with other countries than others. Some say it is due to direct interactions, while others believe it is because they hear stories about what life is like there and feel motivated to make those experiences a reality.

Either way, cultural exchange influences our understanding of different people, societies, and ways of living. It also has major effects on economic growth and prosperity.

Culture can play a big part in determining who you trust, what kind of foods appeal to you, and which languages you speak. These things influence your daily lives and vice versa.

This article will discuss some examples of how culture impacts us, along with potential causes and consequences.

Popular culture and cultural exchange

There is a very popular belief that cultures are in constant change due to two main factors: colonialism and globalization.

Many believe that Western countries, especially America, have influenced most other cultures around the world through their media, fashion, music, and literature. These outside influences are often considered detrimental because they portray an image of the “Western lifestyle” or what people perceive as good life choices.

Some even go so far as to say that these external forces are destroying traditional societies and values.

This theory was popularized during the 1960s when some referred to this influence as colonization. Since then, it has been rebranded as cultural imperialism or global dominance.

While there is no denying that colonial powers did not shy away from introducing their own culture to others, the argument typically does not hold up for more recent developments.

Online culture and cultural exchange

Recent developments in media, technology, and communication have allowed for an unprecedented level of social interaction. With the availability of almost anything you can think of online, consuming content has become one of the top leisure activities. This is particularly true for young people, who grow up immersed in digital technology.

In fact, there’s a growing body of research that suggests how much time youth spend engaging with various forms of media influence their perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs about society as a whole.

Specifically, studies show that when youth are exposed to more negative images and stereotypes of other cultures, it may promote feelings of negativity towards outgroups (people from different ethnic or racial groups) and minorities (non-traditional gender roles, etc.).

On the contrary, exposure to positive representations of diverse cultures may contribute to greater understanding and acceptance of differences.

Less popular culture and cultural exchange

As we’ve discussed, cultures are shaped and influenced by what people watch, listen to, read, and do. If enough other people like something, then they will keep doing it, thus reinforcing that behavior.

This is called social influence. People who share your favorite movie or song probably feel better about themselves because of this.

On the opposite end of things, you can be exposed to things that make you feel bad about yourself. For example, there’s a lot of media out there with vulgar content or stereotypes.

Both of these types of experiences can have an effect on how you perceive life and yourself.

There was a study done where participants were asked to complete a survey for either 10 minutes or 2 hours. Those who completed the longer version had higher levels of depression than those who did not.

Why? Because they were forced to think about their problems and feelings related to depression.

For the same reason, just watching TV or listening to music can be depressing. It may also contribute to anxiety and stress.

The effects of cultural exchange

One way that cultures are influenced is through exposure to other cultures. When people come into contact with different cultures, they notice how these cultures interact with each other.

This process is called intercultural comparison. People in one culture may compare their own country’s culture to another country’s culture to determine what makes both of those cultures unique.

By doing this, they discover why some cultures seem to have similar fundamental values — things like gratitude, honesty, or respect for others. This insight helps them understand his/her own culture better.

Another thing that can happen when people compare cultures is finding similarities between their own and the foreign culture’s. For example, both religions teach about loving God and your neighbor, so you learn something new from Christianity or Islam.

Do not offend a guest

Recent events have made it very clear that some cultures are no longer able to handle being offended. A popular form of cultural exchange is visiting another country, which often includes eating their food and experiencing their culture.

When you visit a new place, there’s always going to be one or two things that seem weird or wrong to you. This is why there’s an initial stage where people feel awkward about what they see and how it makes them feel. It takes time to get used to other ways of doing things.

For example, when you go abroad, there will almost definitely be different styles of dressing than back home. Some countries prefer long, loose shirts and pants under a jacket whereas others like tighter fitting clothes. This depends on what style of clothing is fashionable in the area.

In England, for instance, men usually wear tight jeans with a leather jacket and women dress in similar fashion but without the leather part. In Japan, on the other hand, everyone dresses in white kimono-style outfits and hair covers most of the face. These differences are sometimes difficult to get use to!

But this should only happen once since most travelers now use online shopping sites to find the right products. You can compare prices across sellers and read reviews to make sure you are getting the best quality product at a good price.

Learn a few phrases

Recent trends in culture are influenced heavily by what nation is currently ruling the world’s stage. A lot of things that we enjoy today were inspired or influenced by something else that was popular at the time. For example, many people’s favorite movie genres were first made famous in other countries.

The French loved stories about strong men overcoming great obstacles, which is why we have action movies. The Italians love stories that explore the inner workings of the mind, so they gave us the term psychology!

In fact, some of our most well-known words and terms come from other cultures. Words like “revenge”, “failure”, and “deadly” all originate from different languages. Also, note how Japan has been incorporating western style clothes into their own fashion for quite some time now!

We should be careful to not only learn about foreign cultures through media, but also direct interaction with natives. This could mean learning a language, understanding another ideology, or both.

Keep up with popular culture

Recent developments in media, technology, and commerce have made it easy to be immersed in a constant stream of popular culture. Television shows, films, gaming systems, and apps all contribute to this constantly-streaming content.

The prevalence of such content makes it easy to become distracted by what is currently hot or what seems to be engaging an audience.

As cultures around the world continue to connect through social interactions as well as sharing of experiences and resources, there are also globalized trends that emerge.

These trends sometimes take over society at large, but more often than not they exist anywhere from one year to several years before they are forgotten about.

Some examples of these trends include the Japanese love for anime and manga, French cuisine, and disco dancing; each of those has experienced a resurgence in popularity recently.

Other less prevalent trends seem to completely disappear after having a small moment in fashion. For instance, we may remember when fur was totally acceptable clothing, but since then it has been almost exclusively seen in movies and cartoons.

This article will talk mostly about the effects that cultural exchanges can have on our own individual cultures and how these changes are reflected in the media we watch, play, and listen to.

Think for yourself

how is culture affected by cultural exchange

As we have seen, culture is heavily influenced by those around you. If other people are not learning about new things or educating themselves, it will eventually fade away and die out.

This happens because cultural exchanges happen naturally. When someone learns something new, they share this information with others. They talk about their experiences while incorporating the new knowledge, thus spreading its name.

When these exchanges occur between individuals, great things can happen. Two separate individuals gain new knowledge that helps them grow as people.

However, when such conversations become common at the workplace or in society at large, something different occurs.

People begin to use what everyone knows as an excuse to do not learn anything new. By doing so, they discourage personal growth and even put your career in jeopardy.
