A quick fix
Need some extra money? Don’t worry, it happens to everyone.
You’re already broke, and your car just conked out. Or maybe you’re cash-strapped until next week’s payday, however you’re short on rent, can’t make the minimum payment due on your credit card expense, or just forgot you need to chip in for a birthday gift for a family member.
These small expenses can really pile up, and if you’re not prepared for them, they can really eat into your savings.
We’ve created a brief guide for how to make money ASAP.
Just keep in mind that these are quick-fix solutions. These are not generally ways to make a lot of money over a long period of time.
Sell your stuff
Take a look around your house.
If you have something actually valuable or significant, like your daddy’s 1950s train collection, your grandma’s gold necklace, or the coin collection that you labored over as a kid, offering it may help put out a fire today.
However, you truly may discover yourself kicking yourself down the road. That’s why it’s important to assess the seriousness of your current financial situation.
But depending on the severity of your situation, if you have something valuable to offer, this might be the time to take advantage of it. A much better choice is digging through your closets, attic, and basement for things that might still have some value, just not to you.
For example, you may want to sell an old DVD collection, your 10-year-old’s infant clothing or childhood trike, or the coffee device (or bread maker, or juicer) that you only used for a couple weeks when you first got it.
Post an advertisement on Craigslist or a regional Facebook garage sale group and suggest that you want to deliver the products quickly.
Before you mark a price, though, do a quick Google search of each item and see what they’re going for used.
This will give you a good idea of what kind of money you’ll be able to get for yours, although condition and functionality are ultimately the most important factors here.
There are so many resale apps and websites now, so you may even be able to find a service that specializes in a specific type of item, for example, musical instruments.
In the 10 states that have bottle deposit laws, including New York and California, you can return most aluminum and glass bottles and cans for 5 cents each (10 cents in Michigan). They do not even have to be your bottles.
Lots of people are too busy or lazy to trouble returning a six-pack worth of beer or soda cans for 30 cents and merely leave them out for curbside pickup.
Fill a 50-gallon trash bag with cast-off cans, and you can redeem them for about $12. It’s simply a start, however, you can do it again and again, and all it takes is time and hustle.
If you do not reside in a bottle deposit state, you can still cash in on recyclables by selling scrap metal.
However, if you do have a great deal of aluminum cans on hand, or if you have any scrap metal with copper in it, find a regional recycling center and see what you’ll get (costs differ wildly by market).
Still, unless you have a lot of copper pipelines lying around the garage, or bags and bags and bags of old soda cans, realistically, we’re probably speaking about getting $5 to $20 back.
Sign up for temp work
The purpose of temp work is pretty clear: it’s temporary work for companies or individuals who didn’t know they’d need some extra help or had an employee step out for unforeseen circumstances.
Please remember that signing up with a temp agency is kind of like going in for a job interview.
You should have a professional resume ready to offer, both in paper form as well as a digital file version.
Most temp jobs end up being some form of office work, and you’ll need to take note of the fact that these jobs can last anywhere from just one day to several months, depending on the needs of the employer.
Thankfully, if you do a good job at one temp placement, the temp agency will be much more likely to send you out for other placements.
Try online freelance work
Sites like Upwork and Fiverr have become wildly popular in the last several years thanks to their accessibility and range of job types.
Keep in mind here that if you want to sign up for one of these sites, you’ll need to have a skill that you can offer to potential clients.
Ask yourself what work you’re good at doing and fill out your profile accordingly.
The best skills for these sites tend to be computer-related skills with deliverables that can be sent over an internet connection.
If you’re great with Photoshop, computer filing, or even spreadsheet work, there will be plenty of work out there for you.
However, these jobs, depending on the client, may not pay very much, and most clients tend to pay more money for more experienced workers.
If you need to update your skills, try finding any number of software tutorials on YouTube which can teach you new skills or help refresh your old skills.
A last-ditch effort to make money quickly is to donate plasma from your body.
This is not something you can do very often, and it can make for a fairly uncomfortable experience, especially if you haven’t done it before.
But it’s also much easier to pull off than donating sperm or eggs, which can require rigorous medical screenings and can take a very long time to complete.
Look around for medical facilities in your area that accept plasma donations and call to ask what they require prior to starting.
You may need to share medical records as well as come in at certain times when they’re ready to accept samples.
