As we know, culture is defined as “the collection of things that people use to convey meaningful ideas, concepts, and values”. Therefore, it makes sense that cultures are constantly blending together.

This constant exchange has an incredible effect on other countries. You can see this when you visit a new country. While at home these differences may not be obvious, once you go outside of your country you notice them more clearly.

Some examples include seeing how different buildings are built, eating foods unknown to yourself and their effects, and exploring new areas. All of these things require communication and knowledge of both yourself and the other person!

There are many ways to learn about others through travelling. This article will talk about some ways to strengthen cultural understanding.

You learn about different cultures

Learning about other cultures is an integral part of travelling. When you are constantly meeting new people, talking to them, and exploring various cities and countries, it teaches you more about yourself as a person and the world around us.

Travellers come from all over the place and everywhere has something unique to offer.

By staying in different areas for extended periods, you get to see what makes each city or country special. This includes their culture, food, and music!

And while some cities may be famous for one thing, there’s always somewhere else that can teach you something new.

There’s an infinite number of ways to learn about the world, so don’t limit your options when it comes to places to visit.

You learn how to be a more friendly person

Who you are as a person is influenced by who your friends are, what you study, what you listen to, and what you read. Your personality comes from many things, and exploring different areas of life helps develop yours.

Travelling offers many opportunities for social interaction with people from all over the world. This not only teaches you about other cultures, but also gives you chance to meet new people where they come from and understand them better.

By being open and interacting with people from various backgrounds, you will find that you have developed your interpersonal skills. You will know how to speak to everyone and be able to relate to anyone.

You learn how to be more open minded

There’s a reason why people are so passionate about travelling – it teaches you how to enjoy the diversity of cultures that populate our planet.

Travelling helps you develop your sense of curiosity, understand different customs and ways of life, and expose yourself to new experiences.

This is an excellent way to strengthen your self-confidence as well. We all have things we think we know, but no one is ever really fully informed about everything!

By traveling, you expand your knowledge base and become less narrow-minded.

You also gain inspiration and motivation from meeting new people with different backgrounds.

You gain awareness of your surroundings

A large part of travelling is exploring different parts of the world to determine what you like and don’t like.

You learn about other cultures through meeting people from all over the globe, listening to their stories and how they live their lives.

By staying in one place for an extended period, you also get to see more of yourself than just the ‘you’ that exists inside your head.

You learn who you are by looking at others.’”

There are many ways that culture is mixed together and spread around the world we as humans have created. Language, religion, traditions, etc., contribute to our understanding of what makes us so special.

Some cultures stick with these things longer than others which can be seen as negative or positive depending on if you are culturally strong or not.

We could say that America is influenced heavily by Western culture, but Japan has been sticking to theirs for quite some time now! They seem to appreciate simplicity and quietness which seems to go well with theirs.

You become a more well-rounded person

What makes someone an interesting person is what they talk about, what they believe in, and how they live their lives. Your personality comes from who you are, not what you have to say about something or someone.

Travelling helps develop your personal qualities because it gives you opportunities to meet new people with different cultures, beliefs, and ways of living.

You’ll learn things about them and yourself through these interactions.

These experiences also broaden your horizons as you compare your own culture and way of life with theirs.

Furthermore, by meeting people where they are at, you come away having learned something about themselves.

This is especially true if you find some of their practices surprising or even offensive. By being curious, you grow.

It’s easy to assume that like us here in North America, people outside our own cultural group think and do the same thing. But this isn’t always the case.

By trying to understand why other people behave the way they do, you open up possibilities for changing your own behavior and thinking.

You can appreciate things more

As we know, cultures are built around certain ideologies and ways of doing things.

This is because most societies develop their own set of rules and norms as they evolve over time. For example, during ancient times, people lived among the mountains for shelter and food so culture incorporated this into your lifestyle.

As humans, we learn from others around us and what they teach us. This process is very social – we pick up ideas and concepts not just from those like us, but also from people who are different than us.

It’s an essential part of growing up.

So how does travelling help with cultural exchange? By bringing you closer to other cultures, it gives you a sense of “I have something in common with them – we both enjoy traveling!”

You may make new friends, or realize that there are some similarities in values between yourself and someone else. Either way, it opens up your mind and breaks down barriers.

Travelling helps you connect with people from all walks of life which is why it is such an important tool for diversity and multiculturalism.

You can become a better friend

One of the biggest benefits of travelling is that it helps you develop as a person. Your travel experiences shape who you are, and how you live your life.

As we’ve discussed before, cultural diversity is one of the keys to living a happy life. By incorporating different cultures into yours, you expose yourself to new ideas and ways of thinking.

This not only makes you more intelligent, but also improves your self-confidence. Being surrounded by people with different beliefs and culture gives you a sense of belonging.

You will learn something from everyone around you, which adds to the overall knowledge base you have.

Furthermore, being among diverse groups of people teaches you about socialization. This includes understanding other people’s emotions, habits, and behaviors.

Travelling allows for exposure to all these things, and thus aids in personal growth.

You can learn to be less judgmental

One of the things that traveling helps you do is to get rid of the habit of being judgemental about other cultures.

This happens when you read or hear something about how some people in this country or another are not as good as others at doing certain things. For example, there’s a news story about how some people in a particular city have their own style for greeting each other which doesn’t include shaking hands.

You might also come across stories like “Americans shouldn’t eat foods with bones because it’s culturally inappropriate” or “People from Japan don’t wash their dishes after eating rice cakes because they’re samurai”.

All these examples show that some foreigners feel insecure about what kind of cuisine everyone else knows and/or is familiar with. In those cases, they may try to imitate it even if they never tasted it before. Or maybe they think that cuisine isn’t very creative or special.

Either way, it creates an atmosphere where no one feels comfortable. On both sides.
