Changing cultures is what this world is built upon! Culture is everything you know about how to do things, what makes you feel good, and what feels right. Cultural exchanges happen when individuals are exposed to new aspects of culture that they already have in place and/or new ways to apply their current cultural knowledge.

Cross-cultural exchange can be difficult at times because each individual has different values and beliefs. This creates challenge when trying to make sense of the other person’s culture and why they believe in certain things.

Exchanging ideas and concepts does not work if there is no understanding of each party’s culture. It is important to establish trust before exchanging anything substantial.

It is also very hard to achieve complete comprehension without actively engaging with the people involved. Participate in the conversations they have, ask questions, and try to understand where they come from culturally.

Introduction

There is always something new to learn about our world, including others’ worlds. Breaking down barriers and differences allows for connection and growth. In today’s interconnected society, cross-culture communication or “globalization” is an ever-growing field.

Communication outside your own language and context is tricky, to say the least. Finding common ground and establishing relationships takes time, effort, and engagement. Luckily, we have some tips here for you.

Be familiar

Being able to speak another language is a great way to close that gap between you and others of other cultures. It’s also an easy way to make some extra cash, especially if you are fluent in a popular second language.

But before you start taking classes or investing money in dictionaries and French books, prove that you can talk like a native speaker first!

Test yourself by trying to communicate in your own language something that relates to things that happen every day, such as talking about what you had for lunch or asking how someone else is doing.

This will help you hone your speaking skills while also proving that you know enough basics already.

Be open to new experiences

In this world we live in where technology has us connected like never before, it is easy to get tunnel vision.

You develop relationships with people who are more like you and therefore lose perspective of what the rest of the world looks like.

This can be limiting because not only do you miss out on other cultures’ lessons, but you also fail to learn how they handle certain situations.

By being exposed to different cultures and beliefs, you expand your worldview and understand other facets of life.

Furthermore, by interacting with people from all over the globe, you meet people with diverse backgrounds which promote diversity within yourself.

This article will talk about some ways to be more aware and conscious of cultural differences.

Understand their culture

One of the biggest things that can be difficult when you are in another country is understanding how they perceive time. For example, when people speak about something for one hour, it may feel like an eternity to you.

Another thing that varies from culture to culture is what people refer to as important or significant. In some cultures, talking about money or politics is considered more important than speaking about love and relationships.

And while there are hard rules about how long someone must work before they get paid, there are none about how much time should be spent working on personal projects. It depends on how committed they are to these projects.

Talk about their culture

Many people make assumptions about what cultures are like, how they should behave in certain situations, and whether these behaviors are appropriate or not. In fact, many cultures have practices that are considered immoral or unethical by other cultures.

By understanding more about another culture’s beliefs, you can determine if there are any reasons why something is wrong (or right) to do.

For example, some societies believe it is okay to burn someone alive for making too much noise after midnight. Before traveling abroad, research popular sites such as Google Maps to see if anything notable happens around your destination at night.

This way, you will be prepared for any surprises! Also, try asking locals around where you will be staying and visiting about the area so that you are informed when you go out during non-work hours.

Try new things

There’s a reason why people go to other countries and experience different cultures — it’s because they want to try new experiences.

By exploring new places, foods, and ways of doing business, you will expand your horizon. Plus, most people are familiar with how others behave in certain situations, which helps you understand social norms more clearly.

Conversational French is one of the easiest languages to learn because there are very few vocabulary words that relate to culture. By listening to and studying what natives say, you can easily pick up enough language material to be able to communicate.

There are many ways to improve your conversational skills through cultural exchange. Some of these include reading books or magazines in the target language, watching films and TV shows in the native tongue, and talking to bilingual friends or family members.

Watch what they do

In this era of ever changing technology, communication is easy. Gone are the days when you needed to have someone speak your language in order to understand how things work. Technology has us covered with that.

But, what happens when you try to apply that theory in the real world? What if there’s no one around who speaks the same language as you? Or what if you want to learn more about an area but nobody else seems to be?

These are all great examples of why it can be tough to effectively use social media for cross-cultural exchange.

It may seem like there’s always someone somewhere online talking about something, but you never know if they are actually speaking from their own experiences or if they are just trying to promote themselves or their product.

And even though you might think you “get” some part of a culture because you watch a lot of TV shows or movies related to that topic, you may not fully understand everything involved in that culture.

In fact, many people out there don’t really understand other cultures very well either. That’s okay! We’re living in a global village today so interacting with different cultures isn’t going away any time soon. But it does make establishing trust more difficult.

Don’t be too familiar

In general, being too familiar with another culture can backfire and make it seem like you don’t respect their traditions or language.

When travelers talk about how “insensitive” other countries are for not offering free refreshments after a tour, they refer to this as “empty gesture syndrome.”

By giving away free things (like water or snacks) in your own country, you’re showing that you appreciate others and want to spend time with them. By staying home and eating nothing but junk food, people think that you didn’t care about theirs! – Jessica Baily

It may sound crazy, but there is some truth to this theory. When you’re traveling abroad, making friends can be tricky.

A few days ago, I was talking to an Australian woman at my hostel about her job. She mentioned something about Indians having bad jobs which made me slightly defensive. I felt like she didn’t understand India or what makes people work here so I tried to explain it to her.

After listening, she said something very interesting: “Well, maybe Indian bosses are just better than Western ones.”

I wasn’t sure if she was referring to me as a person or the country I represented so I asked her more questions and got different answers depending on what I asked. It was hard to tell whether she actually understood anything beyond a basic level or if she was just trying to start a conversation.

Learn their language

In addition to learning about your community’s cultural norms, you should also try to learn some of the other languages that people in your community speak.

This is particularly important if you want to interact with locals outside of your native tongue or if they only speak another language.

By being able to communicate in their language, you will be more successful in establishing relationships and understanding local culture.

There are many ways to improve your ability to speak a foreign language, so whether it’s through speaking practice, listening to recordings or even using a vocabulary app, there are plenty of resources available.
