For years, foldable smartphones occupied a curious space in the tech landscape: a dazzling display of engineering prowess, yet often perceived as a niche luxury, brimming with potential but perhaps lacking the pragmatic polish for the everyday user.

This week’s Galaxy Unpacked event, however, marked a definitive turning point for Samsung, signaling that its foldable ambitions have matured from a technological marvel into a mainstream proposition.

The Z Fold7, Z Flip7, and the new Z Flip7 Fan Edition are not merely iterative upgrades; they are the standard-bearers of a new era where cutting-edge design seamlessly merges with practical utility and, crucially, a deeply integrated, AI-powered ecosystem.

The shift in Samsung’s strategy is palpable.

Gone are the days when the primary selling point was simply the ability of a screen to bend.

Now, the conversation revolves around the enhanced user experience, durability, and a holistic approach to personal technology.

Annika Bizon, Senior Director of Marketing and Omnichannel, and Head of Ireland – MX Division, articulated this ambition with clarity: “We are forecasting to sell 20 million foldables, with double-digit growth in 2025.”

This isn’t just optimism; it’s a statement of intent, underpinned by a product line that addresses past reservations head-on.

Durability, long a concern for early adopters, has been meticulously addressed.

Both the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Flip7 boast Corning’s Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 and a re-engineered hinge, ensuring greater resilience for devices destined for daily use.

Kadesh Beckford, Smartphone Specialist Product Manager, highlighted the meticulous design improvements, noting the Z Flip7’s remarkable thinness at just 6.5mm when open, a significant reduction from previous models.

This commitment to refinement extends to the display, with the Z Flip7 adopting a 21:9 aspect ratio, transforming it into a “candybar styled phone” when unfolded – a testament to Samsung’s ability to optimize form factors that were once considered compromised.

Perhaps the most compelling statement of intent regarding the Fold7’s mainstream readiness comes in the realm of photography.

For too long, the svelte form factor of foldables necessitated compromises in camera hardware.

That narrative has been decisively rewritten.

“We’ve been talking a lot about when the Fold is going to have the capability of the [Galaxy S25] Ultra,” Annika observed.

“This is now the Ultra unfolded.”

“The best way I can describe it is you have a 200 megapixel next-generation camera, with the Pro Visual engine behind it.”

This isn’t just an incremental bump; it’s a declaration that the foldable experience no longer demands a sacrifice in imaging prowess, cementing its position as a no-compromise flagship.

Beyond the hardware, the true story of this Unpacked event lies in the pervasive integration of Galaxy AI.

Samsung is not just sprinkling AI features; it’s weaving them into the very fabric of the user experience.

From native apps offering AI-supported media editing tools like Photo Assist and Portrait Studio, to the intuitive One UI features such as the widely adopted Circle to Search, and the continued leverage of Google Gemini, AI is the invisible engine powering enhanced functionality.

But Samsung’s vision extends far beyond the confines of the smartphone.

The new foldables are presented as integral components of a sprawling, interconnected ecosystem.

The simultaneous launch of the Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic, designed to seamlessly integrate with the new phones and last year’s Galaxy Ring, paints a vivid picture of a world where devices work in concert to offer more than just communication and entertainment.

This is where Samsung’s strategic pivot towards preventative health truly shines.

“Preventative health is a big focus for Samsung,” Annika emphasized.

“With AI technology and the rapid advances in sensors coming through Samsung Health, what we can do is accumulate all this data and say, ‘watch out here, you can do something about it’.”

This isn’t the rudimentary step-counting or heart-rate monitoring of yesteryear.

Samsung is leveraging AI to process data from multiple sources – phone, watch, and ring – to offer genuinely actionable insights.

The inclusion of sleep apnea detection, with the capability to suggest professional medical consultation, exemplifies this commitment.

“We believe that sleep is a really good guide for all kinds of health,” she added, underscoring the depth of their research into user well-being.

This principle – of aggregating diverse data, processing it with advanced AI, and presenting it in a user-friendly format – elevates Samsung’s new devices beyond mere gadgets.

It transforms them into personal health companions, shifting the narrative from ‘look at what we can do with a foldable phone’ to ‘look at what we can do to make a difference to your life.’

This consumer-centric philosophy is not accidental.

Annika explained that every innovation is rooted in extensive consumer research, analyzing current behaviors and anticipating future needs.

“How do we marry our technology to be future-focused for them?” she pondered, highlighting the meticulous process of aligning technological advancements with real-world trends, particularly in global medical insights.

Kadesh Beckford echoed this sentiment, stating, “That’s why our aim and objectives is to ensure that we’ll bring you meaningful innovation that will chop and change and enable you to do what you want to do and hit your passion points as well.”

The Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 certainly commanded the spotlight at Unpacked, showcasing Samsung’s continued design prowess and manufacturing innovation.

Yet, the true update, the genuine leap forward, was the comprehensive ecosystem presented – a cohesive suite of phones, watches, wearables, and intelligent software, all working in harmony.

Samsung is no longer just selling a phone that folds; it’s selling a future where technology is an invisible, intelligent partner, deeply integrated into the rhythm of daily life, particularly in the pursuit of personal well-being.

The foldable era has truly arrived, and it’s smarter, more durable, and more purposeful than ever before.
