The tech industry is racing to find AI’s next interface, moving beyond the smartphone. OpenAI, in collaboration with Jony Ive, is reportedly developing a screenless, voice-activated device for a more intuitive interaction, amidst a landscape of high ambitions and past failures.

The tech world is abuzz, not just with the promise of artificial intelligence, but with a looming question: what will be the ultimate vessel for this new digital consciousness?

For decades, our lives have been mediated by the glowing rectangles of smartphones, but a growing chorus of industry titans and visionary designers believes the age of generative AI demands something entirely new, something more intuitive, more seamless, perhaps even invisible.

This isn’t merely a technological leap; it’s a profound re-imagining of our interaction with the digital realm.

At the vanguard of this audacious quest stands OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, which has reportedly enlisted the creative genius of Jony Ive, the former chief design officer who sculpted Apple’s most iconic products, from the iPhone to the iMac.

The ambition is clear: to forge an “irresistible gadget” that serves as the ideal conduit for generative AI.

Ive himself articulated the core premise of this endeavor when his collaboration with OpenAI was announced, observing that the devices we currently use to connect with unimaginable technology are “decades old.”

“It’s just common sense to at least think, surely there’s something beyond these legacy products,” he mused, echoing a sentiment that resonates deeply within Silicon Valley.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, notoriously tight-lipped about the project, has nonetheless fanned the flames of speculation, hinting at a prototype Ive shared with him as “the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen.”

While details remain scarce, whispers from various US media outlets suggest a device unlike any we’ve seen – one without a screen, and not designed to be worn like a watch or a broach.

This deliberate lack of visual interface and traditional wearability immediately sets it apart, suggesting a focus on ambient interaction, perhaps relying heavily on voice.

The urgency for such a device is rooted in the perceived gap between AI’s burgeoning capabilities and our current modes of interaction.

Kyle Li, a professor at The New School, points out that since AI hasn’t yet fully integrated into people’s daily lives, the canvas is wide open for a new product tailored specifically to its unique demands.

Yet, the path is fraught with peril, as evidenced by the spectacular flameout of the AI Pin.

Marketed by startup Humane with an incredible initial buzz and a $699 price tag, this square, badge-like gadget packed with AI features vanished from the market less than a year after its 2024 debut due to a resounding dearth of buyers.

It served as a stark reminder that novelty alone, even with cutting-edge tech, isn’t enough to capture hearts and wallets.

The industry, however, remains undeterred.

Giants like Meta and OpenAI are placing “big bets” on AI-infused hardware, according to CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood.

OpenAI’s commitment is underscored by a multi-billion-dollar deal to bring Ive’s startup into its fold.

Google, too, is in the fray, working on mixed-reality glasses with integrated AI smarts, while Amazon relentlessly expands Alexa’s capabilities within its Echo speakers and displays.

Apple, historically a design trailblazer, appears to be playing a more cautious hand, slowly integrating generative AI into iPhones while rivals sprint ahead, even delaying plans to supercharge its Siri chatbot.

This hesitancy, argues Futurum research director Olivier Blanchard, represents a missed opportunity, asserting that the quest for a beloved AI interface “is something Apple should have jumped on a long time ago.”

Blanchard envisions an AI hub of sorts, likely voice-activated and perhaps even capable of functioning without a constant internet connection.

“You can’t push it all out in the cloud,” he warns, citing critical concerns about reliability, security, cost, and the environmental toll of immense energy demands.

Indeed, the sheer computational power required for pervasive cloud-based AI raises a chilling question: “There is not enough energy in the world to do this, so we need to find local solutions.”

This highlights a crucial, often overlooked, dimension of the AI revolution: its physical footprint and sustainability.

The consensus forming around the ideal AI interface points strongly towards voice.

Google chief Sundar Pichai has long articulated a vision of “ambient computing,” where technology seamlessly blends into the environment, ready to be summoned by a simple command.

“There’s no longer any reason to type or touch if you can speak instead,” Blanchard asserts, adding that since “generative AI wants to be increasingly human,” spoken dialogues with the technology “make sense.”

This shift from tactile interaction to conversational engagement represents a profound evolution in human-computer interaction, promising a more natural, intuitive experience.

Yet, a fierce battle for market dominance is anticipated.

Rob Howard of consulting firm Innovating with AI cautions that the number of devices people are willing to wear is limited, and consumers can easily feel overwhelmed.

The success of any new AI gadget, he stresses, will hinge less on its form factor and more on whether innovators like OpenAI make “pro-human” choices when building the underlying software.

The ghost of the AI Pin serves as a potent reminder that even with incredible hype and substantial investment, a device must solve a real problem and integrate seamlessly into daily life without adding friction or complexity.

A new piece of hardware solely devoted to AI may not be the obvious solution, but OpenAI possesses the financial muscle and the talent – recently hiring former Facebook executive and Instacart chief Fidji Simo as head of applications to tackle this very hardware question – to deliver something truly groundbreaking.

While smartphones remain deeply embedded in our lives and are unlikely to be usurped anytime soon, the pursuit of a genuinely intuitive, perhaps even invisible, AI interface continues.

The future of our interaction with artificial intelligence might not be found in another screen to tap, but in a more natural, conversational, and deeply integrated experience that redefines what it means to connect with the digital world.
